Dear friends! In a village of England called Woolpit, a strange incident took place when suddenly two children appeared.
One boy
And one girl
Both had green-colored skin. Their clothing was completely different from that of the local people, and they spoke a language that no one present could understand. Both children appeared frightened and distressed, and they were unable to recognize any food that was given to them. However, when green vegetables were shown to them, they happily began eating them. For the villagers, this scene was extremely astonishing, as they had never witnessed anything like this before.
This incident is not merely a folk tale. Two reputable English historians of that era, William of Newburgh and Ralph of Coggeshall, mentioned it in detail in their writings. According to them, these children were found during the summer season near a pit or the edge of a field close to Woolpit. The villagers handed them over to a respectable man of the area named Richard de Calne, where their upbringing began.
Initially, both children suffered from severe malnutrition, physical weakness, and mental trauma, and they ate only vegetables. After some time, the boy fell seriously ill and died within a few days. Historical records do not provide clear details about his burial, but according to Christian traditions of that time, it is likely that he was buried in a nearby church graveyard. Since he was an unknown child, no specific grave or memorial remained.
On the other hand, the girl gradually adapted to the new world. Over time, she learned the English language, began eating ordinary food, and started wearing local clothing. When she became familiar with her surroundings, she spoke about her true origin. According to her, she and her brother came from a land called St. Martin’s Land. She said that all the people there were green-skinned and that a dim green light always prevailed there, as if the sun never fully rose.
Viewers! She stated that both of them walked through a long tunnel and suddenly arrived at a bright place, which later turned out to be Woolpit. With time, the girl accepted Christianity and began living a normal social life. In some historical books, her name is written as Agnes, which indicates that she fully integrated into English society.
However, friends, one question always remained: if she truly came from another world, did she forget everything, or did she never find a way back to her own world?
Experts have presented several scientific explanations for this incident. Some believe that the children may have suffered from a disease called chlorosis, which causes the skin to appear greenish due to severe iron deficiency. Another opinion is that the children were actually Flemish migrants who came to England during that period and became separated during a war or attack. Their unfamiliar language and clothing caused people to perceive them as extraordinary.
Despite this, the girl’s account of reaching Woolpit through a tunnel remains a mystery to this day. Was it merely a child’s mental confusion, or did a passage to another world truly exist there?
The story of the Green Children of Woolpit entangles us in many questions:
Does another world exist besides our own?
Is green skin a sign of another being, or merely the effect of a disease?
If the children were telling the truth, where are others like them?
This story remains a subject of research and debate even today. It can neither be completely dismissed nor fully proven. This is why the Green Children of Woolpit are counted among the most mysterious events in history, forcing us to think that perhaps there is much in the universe that we still do not fully understand.
